Written Drum Music - Basics
Trying to read written drum music can be intimidating at first. Once you understand how each piece of your kit is written out on the staff, you can begin to read musical composition. Below are several images of written music. Each piece is represented in the following written music by a quarter note.
Bass Drums
The main bass drum will appear in the bottom space of written music. When two bass drums (or a double pedal) are used, the second note will be written on the bottom line.
Snare
The snare will always be written in the second open space.
Rack and Floor Toms
The first four notes shown above are all rack toms. The last two are floor toms.
Cymbals
When an X appears on the staff, it represents a cymbal. The first four notes shown above are, in order of appearance, ride, crash, splash and china. The last two notes are hi hat notes. When it appears at the top of the staff, it should be played with your sticks. When placed below the staff it should be played with the foot pedal.
Cymbal Bells
When notes are represented by a diamond, it is indicating that you should play on the bell of the cymbal.
