Paradiddle
The paradiddle is one of the most widely used snare drum rudiments. It is simply a group of four notes that uses a specific sticking pattern. RLRR or LRLL.
This pattern produces a different sound than you would get from playing a straightforward RLRL or LRLR sticking. It also translates well to drumset use. Below is a short video that demonstrates how to play the rudiment. I've also included tips on how to practice paradiddles so that you develop timing, as well as a video on how to play paradiddles on the drum set. See those videos here on my paradiddles page.
Below are a few exercises that incorporate this rudiment into them. Remember to pay close attention to the RL patterns as you play. Also, don't focus on speed yet. You want to make sure that you are playing the patterns correctly. Once you do have it down, you should check out all the other Diddle variations.
