Linear Drumming

Linear drumming is a cool technique that can be fun to play. Basically, linear beats are those that only use a single limb at a time. In other words, each note stands out separately and distinctly. Perhaps the example below will make this easier to see.

You'll notice in the picture above that no two limbs will hit at the same time. Snare, cymbals and bass are all separated.

This picture shows a non linear beat. It uses the same basic rhythm as the first beat, but notice that the bass and hats line up on 1 and 3, while snare and hats line up on 2 and 4. Learn more about counting and How to Read Drum Music.

This drumming technique is great for funk and Latin drumming, or for adding a unique sounding drum fill or variation to your Drum Beats. Any pattern can be made into a linear rhythm. I've set up a page with some exercises for you. When you're ready, click here to see my Linear Drumming exercises.
