Flam

The flam is essential to your drumming skill set. One of the easier 26 Standard Rudiments, it is a crucial part of many other rudiments. The picture below shows the notation for this technique.

The first note is a grace (ghost) note that is quieter than the primary note. When going through the exercises, pay careful attention to the sticking patterns.

Above is how this rudiment appears in written drum music. Click here to see how it appears in Drum Tab.

The best way to practice is to separate the two notes greatly at first so you hear two distinct notes (fa- LAM. Then slowly increase your speed. Below are a few exercises to get you started. Once you've got this down, you can start on variations, like the flam tap and flam accent.

Be sure to try all of the flam exercises on this page. I'm also working on creating exercises for a more in depth approach to practicing the flam rudiments, so stay tuned for more. You can also easily write your own ideas out for practicing. Just change up the sticking patterns for more challenging approaches.
