Drumming Techniques

The drumming techniques outlined below are more advanced techniques. Beginner drummers will want to see the drumming methods on my Beginner Drum Lessons page. I've also laid out a few methods for those progressing out of the beginner level in these lessons on How to Play the Drums.

One thing many drummers want to know about is speed. How do I get faster? Well, for those of you interested in increasing your speed, I've made a lesson a Fast Drumming. There are also certain ways of practicing that can help you strengthen your muscles and increase speed. These Drumming Techniques will show you how to build speed through a special stick grip.

For improving your foot control, you can see my Double Bass Drum Technique page. There you will find lessons on the Heel Toe and Swivel techniques.

There are a few advanced hand techniques that can really add to your playing performance. The Flying Fingers lesson will focus on speed and single hand stick control. The Gravity Blast lesson will teach you how to play a one handed snare roll. You should also maintain a good balance using these Limb Independence Exercises.

There are also some important musical drumming techniques you should learn. These will add variety to your Drum Beats. First, you'll learn about Syncopation. It can spice up some otherwise bland beats, and they're fun to play around with.

For a more technical musical concept, see my Polyrhythm lesson. I'll teach you how to write them, How to Read Drum Music, and most importantly, how to play them. And if you really want to push your skills, you can try playing these Polyrhythms.

Learn how to add some funk to your grooves with this lesson on Linear Drumming. Also, check out my Linear Drum Lessons for free exercises and beats.

Before you try any of these techniques, see my lesson on getting the most out of your Drum Practice.
