Double Bass Drum Technique

Double bass drum technique is one thing that beginning drummers (especially metal ones) always ask about first. And, I suppose, it should be. In a genre that emphasizes not only fast drumming, but technical foot work as well, it's often all about technique. So while you can effectively double your speed through Drum Practice, you can also gain an edge through using different double bass methods.

These bass drum techniques are for more advanced drumming. If you are just now beginning to learn how to play the drums, you'll want to learn about basic foot patterns, like heel up or heel down. Before jumping into these techniques, please start with these Beginner Drum Lessons.

For the rest of you, you'll want to try each double bass technique below. One may feel more natural to use than the other and they both come in handy in different situations. They each have their advantages, and which one you choose to use will depend on the style of bass drumming needed.

Double Bass Drum Technique:This lesson covers the heel toe. Once you get the movement down, it's a fairly simple technique. It's basically just a quick double stroke that is achieved through one swift movement. Once you get this technique down, you'll double your top double bass speed and be able to roll on your bass drum.

Swivel Technique:This technique is better for improving your control at higher speeds. You will learn how to let your heels "chase" each other, which lets the momentum do a lot of the work for you.
