Djembe Drum Lessons

Welcome to the djembe drum lessons page. The first video lessons show you how to play the three basic notes: bass, open tone and slap. Notice the three playing zones of the instrument and how each sound is produced by hitting a different zone: center, off-center, and rim. Video by Jim Donovan.

Once you have learned the three basic notes, there are simple exercises you can do to improve your speed and execution. Video by Jan Sebon from Expert Village.

Jan Sebon demonstrates another exercise that utilizes the three basic notes and builds left/right independence. In the first exercise, the left hand plays only bass and tone notes, while the right plays all three. The second exercise is played with only bass and slap notes.

You can also perform basic rudiments like flams and double strokes as seen here.
